WHAT IS POWER FACTOR?
Power Factor is the ra1o of “working power” to “apparent power”. Simply put it measures how effec1vely electrical power is being utilized. High Power Factor signals efficient utiliza1on, while conversely Low Power Factor indicates poor utilization.
Low Power Factor simply means you are not fully utilizing all the power you are paying for. Having a Low Power Factor happens when inductive electrical equipment (motors for chillers, pumps, AC units, etc.) causes the voltage and current to be “out of phase”, creating an increase in current on the electrical load. This causes excessive heat buildup resulting in decreased motor efficiencies AND an increase in u1lity costs as more current is being drawn in. The u1lity companies bill in Kw (kilowatt), and any increase in amperage will increase Kw usage and your energy costs.
